On any given night in the US over 550,000 individuals experience homelessness. Even more persons suffer from housing instability in various forms, including frequent changes in address, dangerous living conditions and or overcrowding. These conditions put housing insecure persons at increased risk for ED visits. Homeless individuals average 5 ED visits per year, with a cost of $3,700 per visit. Furthermore these patients present a large strain on EDs due to the prevalence of unsafe discharge plans, often delaying discharge or resulting in unnecessary admissions for primarily preventative care issues.
